SQL select to JSON string

so i have used sql to build an xml string directly from database data - but my search has been scarce in finding any sql to build a json from database data. I know systools offers json support, but cannot find anything (yes, examples) on selecting directly from the database and outputting to a json string - has anyone done this? Is there a reference I could be pointed to?

JSON Publishing Functions, i.e. JSON_ARRAY, JSON_ARRAYAGG, JSON_OBJECT, JSON_OBJECTAGG are not yet available for DB2 for i, but they are planned for the next technology Refresh (TR).
