  • System Performance and Optimisation

I am looking for some general system performance guidelines. I know once upon a time IBM used to provide guidelines around how much of memory should be assigned per processor, etc. I have come across a site with old systems where power has been thrown at them in belief it will solve all their evils. However they have now run out of resources.

I need some "official" ish guidelines to convince them that CPU is not optimised if it is running below 40% all day every day, similarly paging fault within tolerance based on IBM recommendations, and 260GB is a little excessive based on 8 processors especially with low paging faults.

I know there are lots of factors that can affect system performance, depending on the type of processing and workload and also the type of systems we are dealing with, (in this case its Power6's running V7R1 and V5R4), but as a general rule of thumb does any one have any recommendations or links to any that they care to share with me?
