Creating a WAS 6 server which uses Java 1.6

Creating the title for this subject is the extent of my knowledge on this topic. We are trying to create a WAS 6 server which will use Java 1.6 for clients on older boxes and having no luck. I believe we've created a WAS 6 server on their box using a new version of Java and then tried to go back and reference Java 1.6 and it's broken the instance.
